The mission of TigerMountain Foundation is to empower the South Phoenix community, one person and one community garden at a time. As a change agent for healthy living, TigerMountain Foundation (TMF) envisions a safe community where all citizens can reach their utmost potential. To achieve this vision, TMF currently has four large community gardens on formerly vacant lots in South Phoenix with about nine acres planted in vegetables and fruit trees. The children and adolescents from the sounding neighborhoods who work in the gardens are paid for hours they spend planting, weeding, harvesting and then selling the vegetables at Farmers Markets around Phoenix. TMF also pays some adults for working in the gardens and for working on teams that fulfill landscape contracts. Most of these adults are former prisoners who are gaining on-the-job skills and an appreciation for work. Vegetables harvested at the TMF gardens are also sold at its “Garden of Tomorrow” during the gardening demonstrations held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. Those demonstrations close with a lunch prepared with the vegetables from the gardens plus some grilled meat for everyone who shows up.
